Plums are small deciduous trees or suckering shrubs. They bear white flowers with 5 equal petals that grow in small clusters. The leaves of the garden variety of Plum are a dull green on top. The species that grow in the wild commonly also bear thorns.

Plum fruits have a groove running down one side and a pit inside. The fruit can be very sweet or quite tart depending on the variety. There are recorded to be between 19-40 varieties of plums, depending on what source you use as a guideline as some are so closely related they often are grouped into the same category. Plums and Prunes are well known to have laxative effects when added to one's diet. Though they are produced around the world, China is currently the world's largest producer by volume.

Many varieties of Plum are cultivated for their fruit and/or ornamental use throughout North America. Some varieties are Domestic Plum, American Plum, Italian Plum, Cherry Plum, and the Blackthorn Plum (to name a few).
