The mountains of Lebanon were once heavily shaded by thick cedar forests. Time combined with the exploitation of the Cedars’ wood, has led to a significant decrease in the number of Cedar trees remaining in Lebanon. However Lebanon is still known for its Cedars, as they are the emblem of the country and the symbol of the Lebanese flag.
The Cedars of Lebanon are mentioned in the Bible over 70 times and are often used as symbols of the Messiah. The wood from the Cedars is recorded to be used in the building of King David's Castle, King Solomon's Temple and the Temple where Jesus taught the scriptures. The Egyptians used cedar resin for the mummification process.
In 1998, the Cedars of Lebanon were added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. It is possible to tour the area but only when escorted by an authorized tour guide.
