The Prairie Sentinel Hackberry

The Prairie Sentinel Hackberry tree is a tightly columnar tree growing naturally in the rugged high plains of Kansas. It has been introduced as a specimen tree along many city streets where a larger crowned tree just won't do. The tree is very tolerant and grows well even in harsh conditions. It has good tolerance to both salt and storm damage.

The Prairie Sentinel Hackberry blooms in April-May with leaves emerging from an axil or lineal grouping of leaves. It is available from most nurseries that carry new introductions. This tree was not introduced in nursery's until 2010, so it is relatively new, this may be why it is limited in availability.
Below is a link to JF Schmidt Nursery and Willoway Nurseries they are a grower of this new introduction: https://jfschmidt.com/introductions/prairiesentinel/index.html or http://www.willowaynurseries.com/detail.php?recordID=6722

The Spring color Mid-Green. Summer foliage is a Mid Green. The Autumn Foliage is Yellow. The bark is narrow with cork like ridges giving interest in the winter months when the tree is otherwise bear.  The maximum height is around 45 feet tall, with a spread of about 12 feet. The fruit is about 1/2 inch long, taste like dates and is loved by various types of wildlife.
